Shift: M-F (8am-4pm) - inpatient

Advanced Oncology Nurse Practitioner

Summary

The Advanced Oncology Nurse Practitioner (ONP) is a highly specialized Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) responsible for delivering comprehensive cancer care to patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Working in close collaboration with supervising physicians, the ONP manages hematology-oncology patients using established treatment protocols. This role serves as a key representative of the organization in the community and among referring partners, requiring professionalism, clear communication, and strong collaboration. The ONP will operate in a dynamic clinic environment, addressing a wide range of patient needs-from primary care to complex chemotherapy side effect management.

Responsibilities

Clinical Care and Patient Management
  • Triage calls from patients, physicians, hospitals, and home health/hospice agencies; collaborate with physicians as needed
  • Evaluate and treat acute conditions including oncologic emergencies and chemotherapy-related side effects
  • Conduct histories, physical exams, diagnostic assessments, and initiate treatment plans for both inpatient and outpatient consults
  • Follow established care plans for oncology and hematology patients
  • Identify environmental and personal health risks; incorporate cultural, economic, and resource factors into care planning
  • Coordinate with social services, nurse navigation, and dietary teams to provide holistic care
  • Conduct routine follow-up exams and adjust care plans as appropriate
  • Refer patients to appropriate services when care exceeds scope
Education and Collaboration
  • Provide chemotherapy education to patients and families
  • Educate office staff as needed
  • Collaborate with physicians to develop and review medical protocols
  • Serve as a resource for staff and participate in oncology-related committees (e.g., Commission on Cancer, Pharmacy and Therapeutics)
Procedures and Rounding
  • Assist with chemotherapy preparation, administration, and supervision
  • Support office-based medical procedures
  • Provide first-call coverage and participate in hospital rounds
  • Act as inpatient point-of-contact for the oncology team
  • Respond to infusion-related emergencies or adverse reactions in the on-site infusion center
Documentation and Compliance
  • Ensure accurate and timely documentation of patient history, assessments, and care plans
  • Monitor medical records for completeness and accuracy
  • Conduct periodic reviews of policies and procedures
  • Adhere to safety standards and complete required annual education
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives
Additional Duties
  • Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications

Education
  • No specific degree required; must meet licensure and certification standards
Experience
  • Minimum of three (3) years of oncology experience as a Nurse Practitioner
Licensure and Certification
  • Certification by ANA or AANP as Adult, Family, or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Must meet Tennessee state requirements for Nurse Practitioners
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
  • Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC) certification required
