Job Details
- Plans and provides comprehensive nursing care including executing Licensed Independent Provider’s orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients.
- Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment and referrals of inmates/residents.
- Performs all technical/clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.
- Attends sick call with the physician to see inmates/residents; prepares list of inmates/residents to be examined; prepares examining room and equipment.
- Operates pill call, dispenses medication and documents as required by policies and procedures.
- Calls Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders, and emergencies.
- Examines and assesses new or ill/injured inmates/residents; refers to emergency room or other healthcare facility as required.
- Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
- Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel and addresses their needs.
Job Requirements
- Graduate from an accredited college, university or nursing program with a degree/diploma in nursing.
- Must possess current licensure in the state of employment (Ohio).
- One year of professional nursing experience preferred.
- A valid driver's license is required.
Additional Details
- Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases when appropriate.
- Provides guidance, supervises and monitors nursing care by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
- Maintains good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers and outside provider agencies.
- Utilizes established corporate, facility and correctional policies and procedures in decision making.
- Regularly evaluates provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication.
- Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
- Assists Health Service Administrator with review of medical files to ensure documentation of services.
- Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
- Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required.
- Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially controlled substances.
- Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
- Inspects medical unit for contraband; securely stores or disposes of supplies and equipment.
- Provides health counseling and education individually or in groups as required.
- Assists Health Service Administrator in preparing and maintaining various records, reports and logs.
- Reads, analyzes, comprehends and interprets medical and technical procedures, regulations, and documents.
- Reviews, processes and responds to lawsuits; attends court hearings when necessary.
- Evaluates and recommends physical safety requirements for a safe working environment.
- Facilitates accreditation of medical program by providing required medical services.
- Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports; takes appropriate action in serious incidents and emergencies.
- Escorts or coordinates movement of inmates/residents for medical treatment.
- Performs searches for contraband on people and objects.
- Works rotating shifts and physically checks security of doors, windows and other areas.
- Takes appropriate action to prevent or diffuse disruptive situations.
- Performs rescue functions at accidents, emergencies and disasters including basic emergency medical aid and evacuation.
